Hours after reportedly telling his teammates he would waive his early termination option and return to the Magic next season, Dwight Howard apparently had another change of heart.
During a Wednesday conference call before Orlando’s game with San Antonio, Howard reinforced to Magic officials that he will not surrender the option to become a free agent at the end of the year.
Also on the conference call were Howard’s agent Dan Fegan, Magic CEO Alex Martins and owner Rich De Vos.
Howard reportedly said he wants to stay in Orlando, but by not agreeing to relinquish his ETO, the Magic will continue to field calls from teams interested in trading for the star center, according to ESPN.
"It's unheard of for a player of Dwight's caliber to (surrender his ETO)," a source told ESPN.com.
According to the ESPN report, Howard at first said he would waive his option and return to Orlando because he “didn’t fully understand the ramifications” of doing so.
