NBA Report: D'Antoni left Knicks because Dolan wouldn’t trade Carmelo Anthony for Deron Williams

Knicks owner James Dolan’s refusal to trade Carmelo Anthony to the Nets for Deron Williams ultimately led to coach Mike D’Antoni’s departure.

A source confirmed to Aldridge that D’Antoni and Dolan mutually agreed to part ways, and that the coach’s and owner’s “conflicting visions” for Anthony was irreconcilable.

D’Antoni hoped that the Knicks’ strong play with Lin in the lineup—and Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire out with injuries—would have convinced Dolan that the team could win without Anthony. D’Antoni wanted to acquire Williams and use Lin as part of a three-guard rotation.

D’Antoni will be paid the remainder of the $6 million he’s owed in this fourth and final year of his $24 million contract, according to Aldridge.
