Arenas works out for the Lakers
Gilbert Arenas’ quest to land with an NBA team took one small step forward on Sunday when he worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers in Southern California.
Arenas, who most recently played with the Orlando Magic, was in good shape and made a favorable impression on the team. Still, there is no guarantee the Lakers will sign him, according to Yahoo! Sports.com.
The Magic made Arenas a free agent when they released him through the league’s amnesty provision in the preseason. He averaged 8.0 points in 49 games with the team. He played a total of 70 games with the Magic and Wizards last season.
The Lakers’ coaching staff did not attend the workout, according to Yahoo! Sports. But while they were not present Sunday, coach Mike Brown and star Kobe Bryant have publicly said they would like to give Arenas a chance to help the team. Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak also said he was willing to watch Arenas.
Los Angeles is currently struggling at point guard, with veteran Derek Fisher aging and Steve Blake working back from injury. But Arenas is not without his own physical problems. He recently had platelet-rich plasma therapy on his right knee, a procedure similar to the one Bryant underwent in Germany. Tracy McGrady and Arenas’ former teammate, DeShawn Stevenson, have also had similar surgeries.
