Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic's front office are talking. That's about the only certainty regarding the All-Star big man's future.
"Dwight and I have talked, and we've committed for the time being that we're not going to reveal the details of those discussions as we continue them," Magic CEO Alex Martins told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday, something Howard echoed later in the day.
Asked if anything has changed with his trade demand, Howard's response: “We talked…We didn’t talk like we need to talk.”
Howard, who can become a free agent in the summer, requested a trade before the season, and as the March 15 trade deadline approaches, his destination is anyone's guess.
"There are half a dozen rumors a day these days, it seems like," Martins said. "We're not going to comment on any of them."
One of those rumors has the Magic trying to assemble a package that would bring Golden State Warriors guard Monta Ellis to Orlando; another states that the Warriors would only be interested in sending Ellis to Orlando if it netted them Howard.
Howard's agent Dan Fegan said earlier this week that Howard, who has approved the Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Lakers as potential destinations, would not sign an extension with the Lakers, though that decision would largely be a financial one and not have much of an effect on the Lakers' efforts to retain Howard beyond this season should they trade for him.
As far as Howard's immediate future, Martins told the Sentinel that he's "hopeful" that Howard will be with the team beyond March 15.
