Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is lobbying the NBA rules committee to make late-game goaltending calls reviewable. Cuban said he has already emailed the league about his request, and he spoke about the issue after Los Angeles Lakers small forward Matt Barnes appeared to have touched the ball while it was in the cylinder after a 3-point attempt by Pau Gasol in the Lakers’ overtime win against Dallas on Sunday.
The play happened with Dallas leading L.A., 101-100, with 3:49 to go in overtime. The Lakers took a 103-101 lead on Gasol’s shot, and went on to win the game, 112-108.
It looked like Gasol’s jumper would have gone in without Barnes’ help, but Cuban, according to the Dallas Morning News, said Barnes admitted that he touched the ball before it went in.
"Any potential basket interference in the last two minutes of a game or overtime should be reviewed," Cuban, per ESPN Dallas, said he wrote in an email to the league. "I didn't bring up that play up at all.”
Cuban added, "I'm going to ask the league to change the instant replay rule. The competition committee, it will get to them at some point, but if it's just common sense and doesn't happen so often, they're pretty smart about doing that stuff."
"It was a goaltend that was missed, an offensive goaltend," coach Rick Carlisle said, per the Dallas News. "We had a one-point lead at that time, so it was big time.
"It's clear on video. It's a missed offensive interference call and we should have retained a one-point lead at that point."
