Nets announcer Ian Eagle doesn’t appreciate partner Mike Fratello’s ‘patronizing tone

During the third quarter of Saturday night’s Celtics-Nets game, Yes Network analyst Mike Fratello, after Boston center Greg Stiemsma failed to set a screen for Paul Piece and Pierce traveled as a result, tried to explain what a slip screen is. Play-by-play man Ian Eagle, Fratello’s broadcast partner, did not like the manner of Fratello’s analysis (via Awful Announcing).

Eagle said facetiously, “You just talk at a level I just can’t quite understand. You’re way up here; I’m down here.”

Then, after a long two-point shot by Kevin Garnett, Eagle said, “Kevin Garnett’s right leg was just inside the 3-point line, so Mike, that means they give him two points.”

Late in the fourth quarter, Eagle insisted on revisiting the exchange and initiated this awkward dialogue with Fratello (In fairness, while the conversation was uncomfortable, the two were laughing throughout):

Eagle: “I just want to say that earlier you had a very patronizing tone towards me. I fully understand what a slip screen is. I’ve been doing the NBA for 18 years. But the way you presented it initially was gobbledygook, so, like the audience, I wanted you to come back and explain yourself, and you then just took a firing line on me—and it was uncalled for.”

Fratello: “I don’t think so at all.”

Eagle: “That’s exactly what happened.”

Fratello: “You are overly sensitive today.”

Eagle: “I am not.”

Fratello: “Did you have a bad day today?”

Eagle: “Second game of a back-to-back—it’s very tough.”

Fratello: “The ride back from Philly, did it disturb you last night?”

Eagle: “That was two hours with you, which is probably the reason why I’ve had enough tonight.”
