The five starters from Kentucky will declare for the NBA Draft after winning the NCAA title with three freshmen and two sophomores leading the way. Senior Darius Miller, the sixth player off the bench, graduates and will also come along for the ride.
Coach John Calipari announced Tuesday that the five underclassmen--Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb and Marquis Teague--will forgo their remaining eligibility to play in the NBA. They are all expected to be chosen in the first round.
The players sat at a podium together on Tuesday, each speaking briefly to thank their familes, friends and fans after Calipari announced their intention to head to the next level.
Davis is the sure-fire No. 1 pick in the draft, while Kidd-Gilchrist is expected to go off the board soon after. Jones, who could have been a top-10 pick last season, is expected to go in the lottery, and Lamb and Teague are late-first round prospects.
Kentucky, which finished the season 38-2, had five double-digit scorers last season, using a team approach to get Calipari over the hump. Miller was not far behind at 9.9 points per game. Calipari loses his top six scorers but once again reloads as he adds top recruits Nerlens Noel, Alex Poythress, Archie Goodwin and Willie Cauley.
They will join sophomores Kyle Wiltjer and Ryan Harrow, who transferred from N.C. State but had to sit out a season. Harrow averaged 9.3 points and 3.3 assists in one season at N.C. State.
