Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard admitted he has suggested after some losses that management should fire coach Stan Van Gundy, but says he has always backed off that demand after cooling down, according to a report by the Orlando Sentinel.
Howard again denied calling for Van Gundy's job this season during an interview with ESPN's Hannah Storm.
Howard told Storm he was "in shock" when Van Gundy told reporters his star center was pushing upper management to fire him.
"I got a lot of negative press out of the whole situation," Howard told Storm. 'You know, Coach killer, this or that.' But I haven't said anything this season to anybody in management about, you know, you need to do this with Stan, or vice versa; they never said 'We'll do this for you.'"
Howard admitted it hasn't always been smooth sailing with his coach.
"I think me and Stan, we both have just strong, strong personalities," Howard told Storm. "And at the end of the day we both want the same thing; We've sat in the office, we've had talks, and our goal is to win a championship."
Storm asked Howard if he would have done anything differently over the past year if he had the chance.
Howard replied: "The only thing I could probably say that I could have done better is probably just keep my mouth shut more."
The Magic (34-24) share the fourth-best record in the East with Boston and Atlanta.
Orlando hosts the Hawks on Friday. Howard says lingering back spasms will keep him out of the game.
