GM Kupchak: Andrew Bynum ‘absolutely’ part of Lakers’ future

While the Lakers would not confirm the report that they’ve fined Andrew Bynum for a series of recent transgressions, the organization has acknowledged its disappointment with the young center but insists he remains a major piece of the team’s future plans.

“Sometimes with young players I get disappointed and sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised,” Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak told the Los Angeles Times (via Hoopsworld). “Andrew continues to have a mix of good moments and maybe not-so-good moments. But he’s very bright, a really intelligent kid.”

Bynum is “absolutely” part of the Lakers’ future, Kupchak said.

“Despite some of the events of the last week or two, nothing has changed about our forward approach with Andrew,” the GM added.

Among Bynum’s troubling behavior: taking ill-advised 3-point shots and saying he'll continue to shoot them despite being benched for it; not participating in team huddles and giving flippant answers as to why (“I'm resting ... getting my Zen on,” he said); complaining to reporters about his role in the offense—and then backtracking on those comments; and reportedly blowing off a meeting with Kupckak.

Still, coach Mike Brown says, “I don’t have a problem with Bynum.”

While answering a barrage of questions about his big man, Brown added, per the Orange County Register, “I’m not about to (overreact) right now.”

Bynum, meanwhile, sat out of the Lakers’ 91-87 win over the Nets on Tuesday but said he will try to play Wednesday against the Clippers.
