Lakers’ interest in Gilbert Arenas reportedly tepid

While Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak attended Gilbert Arenas’ workout Sunday in Los Angeles, the team’s interest in the free agent guard is lukewarm, a source tells the L.A. Times.

Arenas reportedly looked good in his workout, and Hoopsworld’s Alex Kennedy tweeted he “worked hard over the summer and dropped roughly 20 lbs. ... He was working out in Orlando until last week and several people, outside of Gil's inner circle, told me that he looked great. ”

Still, not many league observers are buying the notion that acquiring Arenas would be too impactful for the Lakers’ on-court success. Once a prolific scorer, Arenas’ production has declined considerably in recent seasons. In 49 games with the Magic last season, he averaged 8.0 points and shot just 34.4 percent from the field and 27.5 percent from 3-point range.

Lakers coach Mike Brown says he has not even had a discussion with Kupchak about Arenas, ESPN notes.

Kobe Bryant, meanwhile, nodded when asked if he was in favor of Arenas joining the team, according to the report.

"It surely wouldn't hurt," Bryant said.
