Miami Heat, Oklahoma City Thunder reportedly frontrunners to land Derek Fisher

The Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder have emerged as the favorites to sign veteran point guard Derek Fisher after he clears waivers on Wednesday, ESPN.com reports.

The Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs have also been mentioned as possible landing spot for Fisher, but the Bulls’ focus is on finding another big man, and the Spurs are still trying to complete their deal for Patty Mills, according to ESPN.

The Los Angeles Clippers, despite their need for backcourt depth, are not interested in Fisher, the report says.

Fisher was traded from the L.A. Lakers to the Houston Rockets last Thursday. But wanting to latch onto a contender, he sought and received a buyout from the Rockets. Fisher waived his $3.4 million option for next season in order to secure the buyout, the Houston Chronicle reported. The Rockets paid him the less-than $1 million he was owed for the rest of this season.

The Heat considered signing Fisher as a free agent in the summer of 2010 and are interested in him again, sources told ESPN. Miami is also eyeing Ronny Turiaf and, by cutting little-used rookie shooting guard Terrel Harris, can fit both Fisher and Turiaf on the roster. The Celtics, meanwhile, are also in the running to Turiaf, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported via Twitter.

If Miami signs Fisher, LeBron James is on board. “He’s not afraid of the moment and he’s won multiple championships,” James told reporters Monday. “I don’t know what our plans are but I don’t see it as a bad fit if it happens. What we have we’re comfortable with, but he could fit anyone’s team because of his leadership and his commitment to winning.”

The Thunder lost backup point guard Eric Maynor to a season-ending injury in early January and some around the league believe Fisher would relish the opportunity to help knock the Lakers out of the playoffs.
