NBA Report: Thunder close to deal with Derek Fisher

Derek Fisher is close to a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Fisher is free to sign with any team other than the Los Angeles Lakers once he clears waivers at 6:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

An earlier report said that the Thunder and Miami Heat were the two favorites to sign the 16-year veteran, who was bought out by the Rockets after being traded from L.A. to Houston last week.

While the Heat made an aggressive bid for Fisher, the Thunder are in better position financially to sign him and can offer him a more prominent role on their team: replacing Eric Maynor, who went down with a season-ending knee injury in early January, as the backup to starting point guard Russell Westbrook.

Also, some around the league believe that Fisher wants to stay in the West and would relish the opportunity to help knock the Lakers out of the playoffs.
