Magic want 'replica' of Carmelo package for Dwight Howard

The Orlando Magic's desire to receive a Carmelo Anthony-like package for center Dwight Howard has led to teams outside Howard's approved list increasing their presence in the bidding for the All-Star big man.

The thinking goes, according to CBS, that Orlando needs to increase competition for Howard if they want to receive a "replica" of what Denver got from the New York Knicks in last season's Anthony trade: Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mozgov, a future first-round pick and two future second-round picks. The issue is that two of the teams—the Lakers and Dallas Mavericks—can't come close to building such a package, and the New Jersey Nets may not be willing to give up that much.

So, in short, the Magic are determined to maximize their return on Howard—if they indeed decide to trade him, which remains an uncertainty—regardless of where he ends up. The NBA trade deadline is March 15.

One potential dark-horse destination, according to both CBS and the Houston Chronicle, is the Houston Rockets, who have long been looking for a replacement for Yao Ming and missed out on Pau Gasol only because the NBA voided a three-way-trade that would have put Chris Paul in a Laker uniform. The Rockets, as noted by the Chronicle, have expiring contracts that would help them facilitate a deal, potentially as a third team.

The Magic have talked to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the Thunder balked at including power forward Serge Ibaka and shooting guard James Harden without a guarantee that Howard would stick around.
