LSU 7-footer Hamilton declares for NBA draft

LSU center Justin Hamilton has announced that he will leave school to enter the NBA draft, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported today.

“I would like to thank my coaches, the administration and all the teachers that have helped me along the way. They have all provided me with a great experience at LSU,” Hamilton said in a university news release.

Hamilton, a 7-footer who played two seasons at LSU after transferring from Iowa State following his sophomore year, was a second-team All-SEC selection by league coaches this season.

He played in all 33 games (32 starts) and averaged 12.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. Hamilton had four double-doubles, highlighted by a 27-point performance at Florida and 23 points and 16 rebounds against Ole Miss, the Advocate noted.

“His development from the time he arrived prior to the 2010-11 season has been very impressive,” Tigers coach Trent Johnson said.

Hamilton said he will graduate in May with a degree in sociology and is planning to get married this summer.

“I am ready to take the next step in my life,” he said.
